South Korean Prime Minister encourage the descendants of Korean War Veterans.

On 25th, the 62nd anniversary of the Korean War, the Prime Minister Kim Hwang-sik invited 12 foreign students who are the descendants of Korean War Veterans, to the prime minister's official residence, and had luncheon with them.

The Prime Minister Kim honored the war veterans saying "South Korea could make miraculous history because of the sacrifices made by foreign veterans who fought under the flag of UN"

He also said "South Korea has leaped from the world's poorest country to the world's top 10 economic power in just half a century. We have set an example as a free democratic nation that has achieved remarkable economic growth as well as democratization. We have always remembered support the international society has given us"

He promised "We will always remember courage and spirit the foreign veterans have shown, and we will do our best to become 'Nation that never forgets gratitude' and 'Advanced Nation with responsibility'"

Especially, he emphasized "We will maintain abiding and close relations with our allies in various aspects. I hope the descendants of the foreign veterans act as the bridge"

Meanwhile at this luncheon, a Turkish student Turgut(23, Hankuk University of Foreign Studies), on behalf of the descendants of foreign war veterans, said appreciative words to the Prime Minister Kim in fluent Korean language.

Mr. Turgut have been selected for the Turkish national team in Taekwondo, and his grandfather fought in battles near Yongin region at Korean War.

All the descendants invited for the luncheon, have been receiving full scholarships of school fees and boarding fees from South Korean government, and also a special scholarship every month from Korean War Memorial Foundation.

South Korean Train Driver accepts US's highest civilian honor.

A South Korean train driver who died at a rescue operation of US division commander at Korean War, got recognized for his service after 62 years by US Department of Defense(USDOD).

On 26th, the ROK-US Combined Forces Command(CFC), on behalf of USDOD, held a ceremony for the late Kim Jae-hyun(picture left). U.S forces granted Kim`s family 'the U.S. Defense Treasury`s special civilian award', which is the highest award for civilians. Kim is the first South Korean to receive the honor.

Kim joined the rescue operation for Gen. William Dean of the U.S. 24th Infantry Division, with 33 US Special Forces on July 19, 1950. The operation was to rescue Gen. William Dean who was left alone at an enemy site when Daejeon fell to North Korean forces, and also to collect military supplies from the trains in Daejeon region. The operation required train, so Kim volunteered with his colleagues at Daejeon Railroad Office, Hyun Jae-young and Hwang Nam-ho. It was a dangerous mission but he thought that someone had to do it.

The operation ended in failure. Kim was heading for the Daejeon Station on a train with 33 U.S. special forces on board, but was attacked by ambushed North Korean soldiers. They narrowly arrived at the station but could not find Gen. Dean. On the way back, they were fatally attacked and 32 US Special Forces and Kim died. Gen. Dean was held captive near Daegu on Aug 25, 1950, and returned after the war ended on Sep 4, 1953.

Kim died at military operation, but because he was a civilian, he was not acknowledged for his services properly. The Korea Railroad set up a statue of Kim near tracks at Daejeon and Secheon stations in 1962. He received recognition for his service to the country in 1975, and was granted a presidential citation in 1978. His body was placed at the National Cemetery in 1983.

USDOD confirmed with Kim's story recently, and after consulting with Korean Ministry of National Defense's 'Korean War Task Force Team', USDOD decided to grant him 'the U.S. Defense Treasury`s special civilian award'. It wat 62 years after Kim's death.

DOT, CEB Seek More Korean Tourist Arrivals With Yeosu Expo

June 12, 2012, 3:32pm
MANILA, Philippines --- The Philippines’ largest national flag carrier, Cebu Pacific (CEB) has partnered with the Department of Tourism (DOT) in the ongoing Yeosu Expo 2012 in Yeosu, South Korea, which runs until August 12, 2012.
An airline partner of the Philippine Pavillion, CEB shows its full support to tourism efforts by providing tickets, tour package rates and exposure to expo organizers, talents and travel agents throughout the three-month expo duration. It operates thrice daily flights from the Philippines to Seoul (Incheon) and eight weekly flights to Busan.
“As our top source of visitor traffic, the Korean market is of utmost importance to the Philippines' hospitality industry. Koreans accounted for nearly a quarter of the archipelago's tourism arrivals last year and they have been our number one market since 2006,” said Department of Tourism Secretary Mon Jimenez.
DOT reports indicate that 925,000 Koreans visited the Philippines in 2011, a 25% increase from the previous year. Meanwhile, CEB flew more than 380,000 passengers to and from South Korea, a 51% passenger increase compared to 2011.
“The Yeosu Expo has a marine sustainability theme, which is perfect for the Philippine islands’ inherent wealth in coastal and marine treasures. We are investing in a principal site in the Pacific Ocean Zone to best capture over 80,000 average daily expo visitors,” added Jimenez.
DOT’s Yeosu Expo participation is just one initiative to reach 2 million Korean arrivals by 2016. CEB seat sales as low as 50% off, lowest year round air fares as low as KRW99,000 (P3,999), and creative tour packages, also play a part in stimulating travel to the country.
“Despite their relative affluence, Koreans appreciate value-for-money fares in their purchase of air tickets. Similarly, the proliferation of Korean operators and establishments is bringing down rates that appeal to even more travelers,” Jimenez said.
CEB, for its part, highlights various Philippine destinations to Yeosu Expo visitors, such as Busuanga (Coron), Cebu, Boracay, Bohol, San Jose (Apo Reef), Dumaguete (Apo Island), and Puerto Princesa (Tubbataha Reef).
“The Cebu Pacific team is excited to work closely with DOT and other government agencies in promoting the Philippines’ world-class dive sites and island destinations. It will also continue to offer the lowest fares from South Korea direct to Manila and Cebu so more Koreans can visit and explore the country,” said CEB VP for Marketing and Distribution Candice Iyog.
CEB currently operates 10 Airbus A319, 20 Airbus A320 and 8 ATR-72 500 aircraft. Its fleet of 38 aircraft – with an average age of 3.6 years – is the largest aircraft fleet in the Philippines. Between 2012 and 2021, Cebu Pacific will take delivery of 22 more Airbus A320 and 30 Airbus A321neo aircraft orders. It is slated to begin long-haul services in the 3rd quarter of 2013.
